Footnote on the origin of the song: The words to this song were born as a result of my exposure (while a parent at Sunset Co-Operative Nursery School) to the practice of Non-Violent Communication (NVC). NVC is a beautiful and compassionate theory that grew out of the realization that all people, regardless of age or other "difference", share the same basic human needs, and that all of our behaviors (skillful or otherwise) are simply efforts to get these needs met. This philosophy has helped me so much in my parenting. Because if we can remember that we are all the same deep down, and are therefore actually more united than separate, it's sometimes easier to trust, understand, let go and love even when someone's actions seem, on the surface, to make it impossible for us to soften. It applies to us grown-ups, too ;-) So in addition to detailing those basic human needs we all share (like air, water, food, shelter, love, creativity, etc...what if everyone in the world had enough of all of this?), the song is also an attempt to express my gratitude for being taught the lessons of NVC, and for having the chance to be engaged in a parenting and learning relationship with my two children, who teach me so much of what's worth knowing.
